Medical interpreting as a profession differs greatly among EU Member States. Moreover, migration patterns have been changing as a result of social, economic and political events. Consequently, each Member State must meet its healthcare needs while adapting to its own new situations and events. Action is needed in the field of medical interpreting training since, after the first two years of research work, early results indicate that very few medical/PSI interpreting/mediation courses in Spain, Italy and Romania are offered by universities, and that the language pairs in these courses are limited, failing to cover the main languages spoken by the migrant populations living in these countries. Moreover, even though migration flows ¿ also with Romania as a destination ¿ have intensified during the last decade, training for medical interpreters with Romanian or other minority languages is not offered by Spanish or Italian universities, and it is very difficult to find trained interpreters for languages of lesser diffusion used by migrants and tourists accessing healthcare. The lack of higher education training in medical interpreting is probably one of the reasons why ad hoc interpreters are often used when foreign-language speaking patients access health care institutions in Romania, Italy and Spain, and no lingua franca (such as English, French, German or Spanish) can be used to facilitate communication. Family members or friends of patients are often used and, as they have received no training and do not have to comply with a professional code of conduct containing principles such as accuracy, impartiality and confidentiality, this is likely to have a negative impact on communication and clinical outcomes.
